Oscar Nominations, children!

The month of February can be considered an exciting time for both avid and amateur movie-fans. For audiences invested in the entertainment industry, this time of year abuzz with award nominations, and in 29 days, the grand behemoth of all award ceremonies is bound to take place: the Academy Awards.

As someone who enjoys movies, the most exciting aspect about this time of year is seeing the most hyped, talked-about, and beloved films of 2009 become nominated for what is considered the most prestigious honor in the entertainment industry: an Oscar.

Some nominations that got me excited:

  • “Up” – Best Picture

“Up” is now the second animated film in all of history to be nominated for Best Picture, behind “Beauty and the Beast” in 1991. It is the first picture from Pixar to be nominated, and the second to come from a Disney animation. . . affiliation. Most of what Disney-Pixar unleashes unto the world can considered magical, and as a fan of animation, seeing a film I wholeheartedly enjoyed to the point of tears become nominated for entertainment’s most prestigious award. . . makes me all the more happier.

  • “District 9″ – Best Picture

For me, “District 9″ had the honors of book-ending a summer full of interesting popcorn-munching choices! “District 9″ is full of gory, violent goodness, but also seemed to flirt with multiple ideas such as racism. In addition to the weight of the story, this movie’s “mockumentary”-style added a lot to the film.

  • Christoph Waltz – “Inglourious Basterds” – Actor in a Supporting Role

As Colonel Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds,” Waltz simultaneously terrified you, while putting a smile to your face at the same time. Waltz had such an amazing presence, that every scene he was in had tension levels rise to amazing proportions. What made this hilarious, however, was that Hans Landa was presented as an eccentric, polite, and sometimes giddy character.
