Ant-Man Movie Update

Yes, it’s true. This is really happening. To all you Marvel fans out there who wanted to see other characters made into a full blown movie, like Luke Cage, or The Runaways. Do not fret, because this may be the beginning of all that as Marvel Studios is starting to really push production on a lot of projects.

Now before judging, read what they have to say about this Ant-Man movie project. Edgar Wright, writer/director for Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim, in his interview with Box Office Magazine spoke a little about the Ant-Man movie and how the script was coming along. The film has long been in development, the first draft of the script was already written and Wright has yet to start on the second draft. He’s waiting until Scott Pilgrim is all set and done. So far, the first draft of the script has been getting high marks and this could possibly be pushed forward by Marvel as soon as Wright finishes the script.Wright notes:

I haven’t actually started the second draft yet–I’m not going to be able to until this film [Scott Pilgrim] is out–but what we wrote for the first draft, and what Marvel really liked, is that it’s funny, but it’s a genre film. It’s about the level of comedy that Iron Man has. The idea is to make a high-concept genre film where it’s within another genre. His suit and its power is the big gadget and it takes place in the real world. I just wanted to do something that was slightly different than the superhero origin film. I felt that between that and the various mad scientist, crazy doctor films that we’ve all seen, this would be a way into an origin that was slightly different. I’m not really a multi-tasker–I haven’t done anything since Marvel liked our first draft.

So perhaps the Ant-Man movie might turn out a little better than we thought. I do like the writing/directing style that Wright puts into his work.  So I wouldn’t be surprised if this turned out to be a good movie. If you want to read more about the film, and here some notes on casting details for Scott Pilgrim you can read the short interview over at Box Office Magazine.
