Midnyte Reviews: Salt

Who is Salt? This is a question posed to us throughout the whole campaign scheme for this film. Is Salt a C.I.A. Agent? Is she a Russian Spy? Salt is whatever the trailers made her to be. Evelyn Salt played by Angelina Jolie felt like the beginning of a whole new Bourne Trilogy. The story revolves around C.I.A. Agent, Evelyn Salt, who is pointed out by Russian intelligence to be a Russian spy. Claiming to not be an agent, she is then sent on the run for her life to prove that she isn’t a spy. With the C.I.A. and the F.B.I. on her tail, how can she prove to everyone that she is not the Russian spy that she was made to be? It’s a thrill ride trying to figure out which side Salt really works for.

It’s a ride indeed, as the story pulls us back and forth with every scene wondering whether or not she’s Counter Intelligence or a Russian Spy planted in the USA’s most trusted networks. I must say that the story line works looking at it from an outside view, it’s genius to have the audience think of what Salt is going to be doing and what side she’ll end up on at the end of the film. It gets even better as the movie progresses when this mystery of who Evelyn Salt is. Without giving away too much, it wasn’t perhaps as obvious as some people may think it was, however by halfway through the film it gets pretty clear as to where the film is going to end up.

The film focused a lot on the main character, though character development was a little off it did give good incite as to who she was and how she came to be. As for the other characters, it really did not give any other dimensions to all of them. When I say dimensions, I mean having a character that is not only good at what they do, but have faults as well. A character that you can feel is real to the mind and is not just really good at one thing. I feel as if Angelina Jolie attempted to bring such dimensions to this character, but the action scenes just spoke over her dramatic scenes to really give this character depth. Liev Schreiber’s character was an attempt to bring out another character with depth but that seemed to fail in that the movie mainly focused on finding Salt and getting to know who Salt is.

This however means that if you’re looking for a movie with some kick-ass action scenes, this would be one of those films to see this summer. There were several fight scenes in the film that I enjoyed, only having small problems with cinematic choices which made Angelina Jolie seem like she was flying around the screen at one point or another. Other than that, she does the ass-kicking thing so well that you get what you expect from her performance.

As mentioned early the movie was mainly about finding Salt and getting to know who Salt is, with that and the action scenes in the film. It really did feel like a beginning of a new Bourne Trilogy. *SPOILER ALERT* The end was left open and it felt as if they could still go on with the story as we still have to get to know Evelyn Salt a bit more. It’s as if we got a chunk of her life, and don’t know where to place it just yet until we get another piece to this puzzle.

Overall, it was a good way to spend an afternoon in the theater. I wouldn’t say it’s the best movie I’ve seen, but I did enjoy it. Is it worth watching in theaters? I’d say this could be one to wait on a DVD release for. I give the film 3 out of 5 for great action and entertainment factor, they could have done a little better with the story though, or perhaps we get more out of the character in the sequels if there will be any.
