During Comic-Con 2010, there was no doubt that one of the biggest things to come out of the film industry was the marketing for Tron: Legacy. With the hundreds of banners all over San Diego streets to the rebuilt Flynn’s Arcade on Sixth St, Tron has made a name for itself at Comic-Con for the third year in a row. Now that the film is just around the corner, and is hoping to make it big in the box office, director Joe Kosinski is ready to make his move.
Since his name is now a big commodity in the film business after directing such and highly anticipated film, Kosinski is looking to start up a project he’s put on the back burner since he started working on Disney’s Tron: Legacy. He has started to make rounds at the studios trying to find a buyer for his next film, he’s pitching a movie version of Oblivion, a futuristic science fiction love story he’ll direct, based on a graphic novel he created for Radical Publishing. I’ve seen a sample of this I’ve walked around the show floor, him and writer Arvid Nelson both signed a copy for fans who stopped by. I have to say that they art is fantastic and amazingly detailed and the story is quite compelling.
Plotted by Kosinski and written by Arvid Nelson, the comic takes place in an apocalyptic future where most people live above the clouds because the surface of the Earth is uninhabitable. A soldier is stuck on the desolate Earth repairing drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien race called The Scavengers. He comes across a beautiful woman who has crashed in a craft. Together they take an epic adventure that changes his world view. The book Oblivion will be published in 156 page hardcover form later this year.
Kosinski has started his pitch over at Disney Studios, and depending on whether or not they bite, he will move on to the next studio hoping that someone would buy into the idea. I for one hope that Disney likes it and buys right away so that they could start on production ASAP. The story is compelling enough and the work done on Tron: Legacy with the director and studio pairing looks amazing enough to support how Oblivion should look on the screen. I’m sure it will all work out in the end for Joe Kosinski and this project.
