Who is Scott Pilgrim? That’s the first thing I asked when I saw the gigantic, building sized movie poster at Comic-Con this year. Prior to Comic-Con, I had never heard of Scott Pilgrim. I had no idea that the movie, was based on a graphic novel. No, scratch that. I had no idea that the movie was based on a series of graphic novels. Sadly, I had no idea how epic Scott Pilgrim’s story was, until now.
Scott Pilgrim is the story of a 23 year old guy that plays the bass in his awesome band. Everything is fine, until the day he meets, and wants to date Ramona Flowers. When he finally does start dating her, he discovers he must defeat her seven evil exes to stay with her.
If there was no Tron at Comic-Con this year, and if there were no new movie announcements from Marvel, truth be told, Scott Pilgrim would have been the biggest movie, hands down. The tagline for the movie, “An epic of epic epicness” is a perfect fit. This movie will have it all. Side splitting comedy, drama, romance, and awesomely choreographed fight scenes.
After reading all 6 volumes, and watching various trailers and extra clips during the Comic-Con panel for the movie, I’m happy to say that I have high hopes for this movie. Michael Cera is hands down the best man for the part of Scott Pilgrim, and he is joined with other awesome talent on screen such as Brandon Routh playing Todd Ingram, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, and Jason Schwartzman as Gideon Gordon Graves, taking on roles as three of the seven evil exes.
Thankfully, it looks as though most of the major, iconic scenes from the graphic novel have made their way from ink pictures to moving pictures with sound. Director, Edgar Wright, everything from the sub-space highways, to the exact clothing from the novel. If you’ve read the books, then the trailers will look very familiar; the pages have sprung to life.
Back to the original question. Who is Scott Pilgrim? Well friends, there are a few ways you can find out the answer. You can a) watch the movie and enjoy an epic of epic epicness on August 13th, b) read all 6 graphic novels (I highly recommend this in conjunction with watching the movie), c) play one of the amazing games based on the graphic novels, or d) all of the above. The universe of Scott Pilgrim is ever expanding, but also very easy to get pulled into. Once you’re in, you may never want to leave.
