Edgar Wright talks Ant-Man

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is out in theaters now, and Edgar Wright is looking to move forward in his next project. He looks forward to working with the Ant-Man movies with Marvel. He was asked about the development of the film before and he stated “I’ve written a script, and once Scott Pilgrim is done I’m going to work on a second draft. It’s something I’ve been passionate about for awhile.”

Well Scott Pilgrim weekend is coming to a close, and the success of his movies lately have certainly have made him quite the commodity. Though Ant-Man is a marvel character that people have doubts, when it comes to making a successful comic book hero come to life, Edgar Wright just seems to have a magic touch when it comes to these films. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the character Ant-Man, he is part of the Marvel Comic Universe and is best known for his involvement with the Avengers. Dr. Henry “Hank” Pym discovers a size-altering chemical substance. Biophysicist and nanotechnology expert Dr. Pym decided to become a superhero. Armed with a helmet that could control ants, Pym would shrink down to the size of an insect to become the unconventionally heroic Ant-Man. He is later replaced later on in the comic books with several other characters who take the name of Ant-Man, characters such as Scott Lang, a reformed thief with the help of Hank Pym, and Eric O’Grady once a low-level S.H.I.E.L.D. operative. A story fit for a smaller scaled production rather than a full feature film, but Edgar Wright thinks differently.

Vanity Fair interviewed Wright on his latest script development. It seems that Ant-Man might not be the masked crime fighting shrinking man who can communicate with ants comic book readers have come to know, but he will be a sort-of super spy in this version of the hero.

I know there’s a big stigma attached to it, mostly because every movie about shrinking has been about people in peril. I think it’d be great to do a shrinking film about a bad-ass secret agent… Even something like The Incredible Shrinking Man, which is a fantastic film, is about a guy in trouble. But this is going to be nothing like that. It’s essentially a high-tech spy heist film with somebody with a very particular power.

Taking that, here’s what we know of the movie for now:

1. Hank Pym and Scott Lang will be in the feature, with Lang coming in for a flash-forward scene.
2. The film will not be a comedy as his latest works were, but “more of a full-on action adventure ci-fi film but with a comedic element.”
3. Nanotechnology will play a big part of the film, as Wright is currently studying how they operate.
4. Even though Hank Pym and Scott Lang were once members of the Avengers, they will not be part of the Marvel Avengers movie coming out in 2012. Wright says that the time-line for when his story takes place and the assembling of the Avengers does not coincide with each-other. Though there may be some subtle mentions of either of the two characters in the ensemble film.

This may just be a film that creeps up on everybody and catches them by surprise. Edgar Wright’s latest successes make it seem very likely to happen. We’ll be keeping you up to date with more news as this story develops.
