Tech Talk: Apple, Android, Carriers & More!

Remember those days back 8-9 years ago when T-mobile released their official most popular phone for teenagers and celebrities known as the side kick? Well I do.  Seeing friends and families having the ability to use the internet wherever they go, chatting on a phone on AIM or text messages with a full qwerty keyboard while I was stuck with a phone that has a dialer and a 1.3 inch screen, non colored display (only green, but hey, I customized the light settings on my Nokia 3390 to have some flashy lights) phones.  Ah yes, those were the days wasn’t it?  Until T-mobile had decided to cancel productions on the Sidekick since the release of the first android phone the Google G1 by T-mobile back in 2008.  The sidekick started to lose it’s popularity since the Google G1 had the full capability of the 3G speed, a full qwerty keyboard and a full touch screen to let your fingers taste ecstasy for the first time.  So where am I heading to?  Let’s just say if you can combine the specs of the current android phones and managed to squeeze in those specs into a sidekick, just what will you get?

Whoa!  Would you look at this!? It’s the new T-Mobile Sidekick 4G!  Specs?  Everything  from Samsung you wanted it to be.  An Android phone, a 3.5 inch display screen, a 1Ghz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor, supports on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 21Mbps, a front facing camera and it’s signature pop tilt hinge keyboard that made the phone Sidekick, a Sidekick.  Oh if I was a bit younger, I would be all over this phone and oggling it like a little school girl.  Anyway, let’s get back down to the apple side!

So since the release of the ipad2 (and I was there during the release at one of the apple stores, a line,  that’s probably 10-15 stores was a bunch of people with iPhones, iPods, and even the first iPad was in line for the ipad2), apple has sold more than 1-million units in just a couple of days.  The first gen iPad hit their 1 million mark to almost 1 month.  That’s a big improvement.  Apple shares (Stock market) rose up by 0.6 percent to $354.20 in the morning trade of NASDAQ (March 14, 2011).

In other news, since the breakout of the huge earthquake and tsunami hit japan, iPad2 and iPhone4 are expected to have shortages.  Two of Apple’s component suppliers, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co and Toshiba, have reportedly shut down some of their operations in Japan in the wake of the March 11th earthquake and tsunami.  Toshiba manufactures 40% of the world’s flash memory, and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co is believed to be Apple’s go-to company for BT resin — which is used on circuit boards.

On to our nation carriers.  Big news! Sort of.  AT&T has bought out T-Mobile USA for $39 billion dollars thus making AT&T the largest carrier in the world have 130 million customers, while Verizon wireless (used to be #1) with 97 million customers.  What holds the future of T-Mobile handsets?  Once AT&T completes the merge with T-Mobile, all 3G handsets from T-Mobile will become useless after one year. What will happen next?  We’ll find out soon!
