Tomorrow starts the 25th anniversary for one of the biggest entertainment conventions to hit stateside. WonderCon, a smaller but still big event coming from the people who bring you Comic-Con every year, will return to San Francisco for the weekend. Starting Friday Apr. 1 and ending on Sunday Apr. 3, it will be a weekend full of comic geeks, movie enthusiasts, video gamers, cosplayers, celebrities and just pure fun, as fans, developers, professionals, and celebrities all blend in under one roof.
WonderCon is a yearly event found in downtown San Francisco at the Moscone Center. Each year, professionals from the entertainment business come out to celebrate and to promote their upcoming projects. Whether it be a new storyline for a comic book, a big announcement for a popular video game, sneak peaks to upcoming films, or just promoting their company or studio, they all come together under one roof to join the fans who come out to see and hear them.
There will be celebrity autograph signings, an exhibit hall where people can buy from a variety of booths; that include Marvel, FOX, and other big names, not to forget small store fronts as well. There are also rooms for watching anime, and other movies, world premiers and sneak peaks galore for future blockbuster hits. WonderCon brings all that and more to downtown San Francisco for 3 days.
This year WonderCon celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2011, with a quarter-century history of being one of the country’s best comics and popular arts conventions. Started in 1987 as the Wonderful World of Comics Convention by Bay Area retailers John Barrett, Bob Borden, and Rory Root, along with comics writer/agent Mike Friedrich, who continued with the event for 15 years with retailer Joe Field and program director Bryan Uhlenbrock. In 2002 the show was acquired by Comic-Con International and the following year moved from Oakland to its current home at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco. WonderCon welcomes back Joe, Mike, and Bryan to help celebrate the 25th anniversary.WonderCon celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2011, with a quarter-century history of being one of the country’s best comics and popular arts conventions.
