Hello Whargarbl fans. Welcome to a cool album co-review from Whargarbl TV. This time Midnyte and I will be bringing you our thoughts and views on the second EP from the band April Chase entitled “Still Breathing”. The band April Chase is an alternative rock band originally from the San Jose area and has been steadily gaining attention. Currently the band members are: Carina Valdes-vocals, Tim Ferguson-guitar, Mark Sahagun-guitar, Brian Walker-bass, and Lachlan Franckx-drums. April Chase has managed to share the stage with bands such as The Higher and Story Of The Year and has done over a total of 60 shows within the past year. They released their first EP “In The Midst Of Sirens” on January 9th, 2010. I am new to April Chase and haven’t heard of them until Midnyte told me about April Chase. Midnyte, how did you come across this band?
Midnyte- The first time I really heard of this group was during the Battle of the Bands Finale held at San Jose State University. I heard the name before, but I haven’t really heard their sound until then. When they got up on stage, the first couple notes, I instantly liked them. My friend who came along with me, ran down and instantly bought one of their albums, it was refreshing to see that fellow SJSU students have such talents. They debuted their music video as well, and though the video could have used a little working on, I enjoyed the sound as they played along with the video. I’m glad that they continued on after winning first place at Battle of the Bands, and out with their new album that I could say it’s a pretty good one.
Midnyte’s thoughts on “Still Breathing”:
The “Still Breathing” EP has some really good songs, that has a bit of the bluesy/pop-ish feel to it. The album has a very fun feel to it, and you can really tell that they put a lot into making this EP. The blend of the vocals and music fit very well together. What I liked, is that the songs flowed very well from one track to the next, without making each song sound the same. Each song had something different to offer, and gives the listener a good range of music, without losing that “April Chase” feel. I can’t really compare them to the more mainstream groups, but for me that’s a good thing because I don’t want to be listening for another Lady Antebellum, or No Doubt. April Chase has their own kind of music that sticks between some sort of pop/rock/blues and it works very well for them. A job well done by the band, and I hope they continue to do more and grow bigger.
Acousticfan’s thoughts on “Still Breathing”
“Still Breathing” is full of incredible songs and I am impressed by the bands musical and lyrical ability. The listener can tell that the band has really put a strong amount of effort into this EP. “Still Breathing” has plenty of variety and like Midnyte had said, “each song has something different to offer” and I strongly believe having a variety is a good thing. The entire album rocks and is a blast to listen to. If you’re a fan of alternative music and want to hear a change from other alternative artists, April Chase: Still Breathing is the album for you
Midnyte’s favorite songs from “Still Breathing”
It’s hard to pinpoint a particular song as a favorite of mine, because each song brings something different. “Time Won’t Tell” is a pretty laid back song that you can just sit back and tap your feet to, “Forever” is the sit back and feel good song, while “Ones and Twos” is more of a pop rock song that you want to get up and dance to, and “Terrible Things” brings in the beatbox and just gives it a totally different feel from the rest of the album. The song that I really enjoyed, rather than picking out a favorite, is “Forever” showcasing the vocal talents of Carina Valdes with nice message to it with a really mellow beat and rhythm, I’m a sucker for these types of songs. I can just sit back and listen to it on repeat for a while just letting it sink in.
Acousticfan’s favorite songs from “Still Breathing”:
I really don’t have a particular favorite off of “Still Breathing”. I enjoy every single song from start to finish but I do have to say that the songs I enjoy most are “Time Won’t Tell” and “Terrible Things”. Time Won’t Tell comes off to me as a positive song even though the song is about feelings of doubt an individual has on beginning a new relationship or not. Terrible Things is a slower paced alternative ballad to listen to. My favorite moment is at the end when the band decided to include a quote from President Obama during one of his speeches; that I thought was a perfect end.
Acousticfan-Midnyte with my rating system, would you say April Chase’s EP “Still Breathing” is an album Worth Owning (all songs rock), Decent Album (a couple of the songs are ok), or Throw This EP In The Trash?
Midnyte’s Rating:
I would say this EP album is definitely worth owning. I can see this talented bunch going a long way, and just getting better and bigger. You don’t usually hear this level of quality coming from a group that hasn’t been out there like the mainstream artists have been, and to be honest it’s the best place to be, always striving to get out there and get your name known. Perfecting your craft, and setting new bars for yourself and others. If you haven’t gotten a chance to hear them yet, “Still Breathing” is an EP album that you should definitely grab and listen to. I really enjoyed this album and wish April Chase the best of luck as they move forward in the music industry.
Acousticfan’s Rating:
I would have to give this album a definate Worth Owning. This is one of those alternative albums where you have to listen to it over and over and over some more. I honestly don’t know why someone would not like listening to this album. “Still Breathing” is full of so much energy and creativity that to me personally I can’t stop listening to it. Ever since I’ve had “Still Breathing”, I listen to this EP at least two times a day. So I strongly suggest downloading their mp3′s or if you still buy cd’s, get a physical copy of the album.
