During this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I was invited to check out a new line of Mimobots being released by Mimico Inc.
Looking at the e-mail. I had some slight idea of what these products were but I didn’t know if I wanted to actually check them out. I decided that I was curious enough to find out more about these, Mimobots.
Low and behold, I instantly became a fan once I spoke with one of their representatives, I believe her name was Jessica. Very cool chick, seemed like someone passionate about what she is doing and also very informative. So thank you Jessica.
Now for those of you who don’t know what Mimobots are, they are:
USB Flashdrives that are designed by certain artists to look like certain characters from Anime to Films to Video Games.
They have been around for a while now and here’s a description you will find about them on their main site:
Since 2005, Boston-based design house Mimoco has fused the art of contemporary characters with the functionality of personal data storage devices making its name known in both the pop-culture driven Art Toy underground and the savvy high-tech ‘tronic world. With a mission to bring style and soul to consumer electronics, Mimoco is renowned for our flagship collection of MIMOBOT® designer USB flash drives.
The distinctive character-based MIMOBOT line offers from 2GB to 16GB of flash memory storage and transport for all your most precious music, docs, pics and other personal data bits and bytes. The MIMOBOT range is available in several crossover flavors, such as Star Wars, Hello Kitty, Halo, and Japan’s Domo and our MIMOBOT Artist Series has functioned as a canvas for pop-artists like Gary Baseman, Jon Burgerman, and Simone Legno amongst other fresh designer toy, street art, and urban cultured talent.
MIMOBOT flash drive creations also originate from the minds of our fans through design challenges voted on by our ever-growing community, first with the VDC MIMOBOT Series and the Infectious x MIMOBOT Design Challenge. And our original MIMOBOT Core Series of data deprived denizens hailing from far out planet blõôh* is what started this whole creative revolution in portable personal data storage.
Additionally, MIMOBOT flash drives deliver original exclusive preloaded “mimory” content for your enjoyment. MimoZine™, a quarterly video-based digital magazine, features interviews with musicians, profiles of artists, pop-culture event coverage, and other things at the intersection of technology and art. Also look for our mimoDesk™ personalization suite of wallpapers, icons, avatars, and screensavers to enrich your digital desktop experience and mimoByte™ sound software that gives MIMOBOT a voice.
By “voice” they mean that they go to all these places to make sure that there is a bit of content inside of these Mimobots that pertain to the character, like a comic book character may have a digital comic or special art within the flash drive. Or the best example is how the company went to a Hello Kitty convention in Japan, took a bunch of pictures and shared them by putting those pictures in the Hello Kitty MIMOBOT.
It’s a very cool way of bringing out content that people wouldn’t normally see on a daily basis and also bring new life to these characters without losing their integrity.
During SDCC 2011, they released a new line of MIMOBOTS. They brought forth the Star Wars Series 7 that features characters Lando Calrissian and Bossk in classic MIMOBOT form, as well as new versions of Han Solo, Princess Leia and Boba Fett. Also making their Comic-Con debut is Hello Kitty BLOTz™, a collection of 11 colorful and randomly selected Hello Kitty MIMOBOT USB drives, presented in a blind assortment box. Each individual box contains one randomly selected drive from Sanrio’s Hello Kitty Loves Animals collection.
Other popular MIMOBOT collections that were showcased include newly released Transformers and Green Lantern characters, in addition to fan-favorites Batman, Hello Kitty, tokidoki and Mimoco’s own Core Series characters. Each MIMOBOT designer flash drive comes in a range of 2GB to 16GB memory capacities and is preloaded with MimoDesk™ character-specific content including wallpapers, avatars, screensavers and other digital extras. And during the con they also introduced their new 32GB and 64GB Flash drives so you can enjoy more space on these little awesome collectibles and products.
Limited-edition, SDCC-exclusive MIMOBOT drives available for purchase at the Mimoco booth included: Star Wars’ Bossk, Emily the Strange and DC Comics’ Harley Quinn – all in true MIMOBOT form. Mimoco also featured exclusive fan signings from the aforementioned properties in the Star Wars booth and Mimoco booth.
They love the cons and believe that it’s their best ways to reach out to the audience that has accepted them for what they were, and are very happy for the following they have received through con attendees and give back every time they are out there promoting these products.
So next time you go to a Convention full of geeks and nerds, look around the exhibit hall and try to spot the MIMOCO booth, check them out and you may also be pleased with what you get out of the experience of just finding out what they are.
Or even check them out on their website MIMOCO.COM
